Ian Romain, PE

Speaker Bio:

Ian Romain, PE is the Chief Marketing Engineer at Rocky Mountain Steel Foundations, the Regional distributor of Chance Helical Piers. He is currently licensed PE in Montana, Utah, Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, and North Dakota. Ian graduated from MSU–Bozeman with a BSCE in 2005, and began working for a consulting structural engineering firm, working on commercial & residential projects, including foundation design of steel buildings.  Ian then began working for RMSF, where his current job duties include: providing technical support to engineers, assisting in designs, performing deep foundation calculations, stamped engineering submittals, feasibility studies & product delivery.


Course Abstract:

Often times, Structural Engineers are presented with projects that due to soil or site conditions (hillsides, fills, high water table, expansive soils, etc), limit the feasibility and effectiveness of traditional foundations and other load transferring devices. In these cases, a cost effective and time saving alternative is the Helical Pier. This course will provide a historical background of helical piers, design considerations for the numerous applications of helical piers and provide actual case studies from the Western United States. Particular topics to be covered include:  Helical Piers in new construction, Helical Anchors used in soil retaining, Underpinning of existing structures, and the high-capacity Helical Pulldown Micropile. The primary focus of this course is to expose Structural, Geotechnical, and Power/ Telecom, as well as other engineers, to the applications of Helical Piers. This course will provide current and relevant case histories, and show how the Helical Pier is a “tool” that should be in every engineer’s tool belt.
