Gusset Plates: The Evolution of Simplified Design Models by Bo Dowswell, PE, PhD, Principal at ARC International

In the design of steel structures, each member is isolated and evaluated using the appropriate AISC Specification requirements. Similarly, gusset plate connections can be complex structural systems that are separated into several elements for design purposes. The behavior of these gusset plate elements can be captured with simple design models, where portions of the plate are treated as structural members with well-documented and predictable behavior. This presentation will provide a brief history of gusset plate design methods and discuss their evolution over the last century. Current design provisions will be discussed, where column and beam models are used to predict the strength of gusset plates in various configurations, including wrap-around gusset plates. The presentation will conclude with a preview of a new method to predict the compression strength of gusset plates using notional loads.

9:15 am - 10:15 am

Steel Solutions Center FAQs by Jonathan Tavarez, PE, Staff Engineer at AISC

Averaging over 200 inquiries each week, the Steel Solutions Center can readily identify trends in the inquiries received. The Steel Solutions Center works closely with the Engineering and Research Department and the Committee on Technical Assistance to develop new Frequently Asked Questions to address these topics. These questions are published on the website each quarter, providing a valuable resource to the design and construction industry. This one-hour seminar focuses on the most commonly asked questions from this resource, including such topics as the new AISC Specification, the new AISC Seismic Provisions, and high-strength bolting.

10:30 am – 3:45 pm with 1-hour lunch break (12:00 pm-1:00 pm)

2016 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and the 15th Edition Steel Construction Manual by Louis F. Geschwindner, PE, PhD, Professor Emeritus at Penn State University

The 2016 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and the 15th Edition Steel Construction Manual are both available now. You won't want to miss this half-day seminar where important changes and clarifications that have been incorporated into these documents will be explained.  The seminar will examine the Specification chapter by chapter and highlight changes since the 2010 version.  Design examples will be presented to demonstrate the changes in the Specification and how to apply useful design aides in the Manual.

The seminar will highlight changes to:

  • Treatment of compression members with slender elements
  • Treatment of tees and double angles in bending
  • Shear provisions for built-up I-shapes
  • Bolted connection provisions
  • And more
